I know I have been neglecting my care-givers, promise to try to post once a week to the group, so I thought this might make up for it! Here is a list of links about memory and Alzheimer's Disease. It comes courtesy of PBS, whom I love! I am still looking for the story that was done by Alan Alda on their series of Science, but haven't found the story about the brain injections of stem cells I watched a few weeks ago.

So here is a link to a page that contains 2-3 dozen links! http://www.pbs.org/saf/1402/resources/resources-1.htm

Check it oout, check out the links and let readers know which ones are helpful!

Sorry to be brief, but I have been helping my Dad watch my Mom so he can get some things done without worrying about her. She is to the point now that she can't really be left alone, unfortunately. I have really found myself enjoying the time I do spend with her, thanks to all your helpful suggestions and comments!

Good Health to you all! Tom W.

And of coarse, 5 minutes after I publish this I find the link I was looking for!

http://www.iptv.org/series.cfm/10795/alan_alda_scientific_american/ep:1402

This show details a woman who gets stem cell implants, her own, in her brain. It is really interesting and talks about where researchers are heading as they search for a cure, ENJOY!

Good to hear that you are getting to spend some time with your Mom. My Mom is now on Hospice care -- It is wonderful, those people are the greatest. I have taken her off of Aricept and she seems to be doing better -- go figure. She has actually said a few understandable words lately (the first in almost a year) and she has stopped choking.

In case anyone is interested with what's happening in Alzheimer's research Science Daily is a wonderful source for info -- I recomend it. I wish I would have found it 10 yrs ago.

too often close family don't recognize the signs or they dismiss them. It hurts the person more that they aren't getting the help they need sooner. Aging has more than one area that needs medical care and by not recognizing and communicating any other problems the person tends to need more medical care and longer recovery. Caregiving is draining....both of you take time for yourselves occasionally just a little break can do wonders.

Thank you so much for the links Tom and Desert...

mstanley... I don't live near my parents but, I kept telling my family back home that mom was not "herself". It took about three years to get her diagnosed. :(

I think it's kind of a denial thing too on both the parents and childs part. Some can cover it up real good too unless you know what you're looking for and at. That must have been really hard those three years worrying....

mstanley... yes, it was. My mom was getting violent and my dad didn't understand and my sister and brother who live there were no help. When I finally got through to the family... my dad took her to the doctor to get diagnosed. Her medication has at least slowed down the inevitable results. I'm okay with that. As long as I have my mother... I'm happy.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the info, I will pass this on to my Mom. She has been caring for my Gramz for over 10 months now... 24/7. This is a complete Bitch of a Disease!

All my best to everyone.

Have a good'un,

Aloha

My aunt, mother of my late gay cousin (also named Tom) has been having so many problems she was finally placed in a care center. I'm 400 miles away but she's still visited almost daily by Tom's partner of 20 years.

I believe in her eighties she's probably too late for much of the new therapies showing up, but it's nice to know there's help available for future generations. (Or, since she's the second generation with this issue, for me -- knock wood.) Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the group membership Tom. My mom has been diagnosed with memory problems; they won't say Alzheimer's yet I quess some more tests are needed to rule in its favor.

But its affecting the family. And I am going to need support through this. My family (outside the parents) are going to drive me nuts.
